As of October 1, 2024, the Ministry of Health has implemented the Social Health Insurance Act (SHIA), marking a shift from the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) to the new Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF). Governed by the Social Health Authority (SHA), this transition aims to provide more comprehensive healthcare coverage for all Kenyans.
Employer Responsibilities: Employers are required to register their employees and dependents through the SHA Employer Portal by October 1, 2024. NHIF benefits will cease on September 30, 2024, and SHIF benefits will commence the following day. Any contributions made after November 9, 2024, will be credited to SHIF.
Benefits of SHIF: SHIF offers enhanced healthcare coverage, including access to a wider range of medical services and providers, streamlined registration processes, and improved claim procedures, ensuring better service delivery for all.
